Joining the Itch Family at Opera Holland Park
It was a great pleasure to join the cast of Jonathan Dove’s Itch at Opera Holland Park this summer. This extraordinary production, directed with vision and heart by Stephen Barlow, brought together a wonderful company of performers (six of whom returned from the opera’s premiere just two years ago) under the baton of Matt Scott Rogers and I felt genuinely welcomed into the fold.
Playing Cake (and Berghahn) in this vibrant and deeply relevant story was enormous fun. I’m so grateful to everyone who came to see it, to OHP for their warm welcome and friendship throughout the process (as well as limiting the amount of burnt hair!), and for the kind words from those who wrote about the show.
Bachtrack “The top shout goes to Hall… a delicious countertenor with immaculate control of high-note vibrato.”
The Stage “a revelation, striking for his controlled tone and phrasing, which flow like waves.”
MusicOMH “a countertenor that feels both pure and poignant.”
Plays to See “excellent and doubles roles with a highly ironic effect… his vocals are capable of soaring with anguish and pain”
And I must say: we were blessed with surprisingly amiable weather! Not always guaranteed in an open-sided theatre, but the elements were kind to us. Perhaps Gaia was aware all along…
Thank you all. 🌍👨🔬🌊
